Nemrut is a mountain in the Taurus Mountain range that separates the Mediterranean coastal region from the central Anatolian Plateau in southern Turkey.
In 62 BC, King Antiochus I Theos of Commagene constructed a tomb sanctuary on the summit of the mountain, at an elevation of about 2,000 meters.
The scale of this structure and the amount of labour that was required to build it are impressive on their own. Based on the inscriptions at their bases, the statues have been identified as representing Antiochus I himself.
