In 2013, the residents of Kalachi, a small village in Kazakhstan, began to take to their beds with a mysterious illness. They couldn’t stop falling asleep. When they woke up, often days later, they remembered nothing. This illness has affected more than 140 people in Kalachi and Krasnogorsk, dusty settlements in the huge Kazakh steppe, with a total population of 810 people, mostly ethnic Russians and Germans. Inhabitants of a neighboring town called Krasnogorsk similarly noticed an uptake in a mysterious condition that hit victims with an overwhelming urge to sleep.
The illness has affected both adults and children. Even pets were not immune. Authorities began to look into the matter, conducting environmental surveys, viral and bacterial tests on patients.
