NATO to increase high-readiness response force to over 300,000 troops: Stoltenberg

From Global News.

NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg said Monday, ahead of the summit in Madrid, that the alliance would increase its high-readiness response force to “well over” 300,000 troops.

Stoltenberg said NATO would also increase its stockpiles of military supplies, add more pre-positioned equipment, and strengthen command and control capabilities in what he called “the biggest overhaul of collective defence and deterrence since the Cold War”

He also told reporters that by increasing the number of troops in its high-readiness response force, the alliance intends to prevent, “not provoke” aggression from Russia.

Stoltenberg said he’s confident Russian President Vladimir Putin “understands the consequences of attacking a NATO-allied country.”
