Phlox seeds require darkness to germinate. University of Memphis Director of Landscape Joellen Dimond says phlox is picky with germinating conditions, but the main key is that it must be dark. She recommends planting the seeds according to the seed packet directions and covering them with a piece of black plastic. Every few days lift the plastic and see if you have sprouting. Once you see the germinating seeds remove the plastic.
