Trudeau calls for end to violence and solution in Mi’kmaq lobster fishery dispute

From Global News.

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau called for calm on Friday as tensions continue to escalate following a mob attack on two disputed Mi’kmaq lobster compounds in Nova Scotia earlier in the week.

Trudeau said finding a solution to the dispute won’t be easy, but that violence and harassment are not acceptable.

“This is a situation that is extremely disconcerting,” he said. “That’s why we’re calling for an end to the violence and harassment that’s happening… I understand the concerns and the conflict going on right now but we need to find a solution.”

Ross Lord explains what’s behind the dispute, and what’s causing tensions to escalate.
